MEN’S BASKETBALL

GO INTO BREAK 3-0 IN CUNY; MALAVE SCORES 1,000!

Since the last report two weeks ago, the City Tech men’s basketball team achieved two great CUNYAC victories and suffered two tough non-conference losses to New Jersey schools.

First the Yellow Jackets stuffed Brooklyn College 91-55, behind the usual contributions from seniors Shacun Malave (18 points, 14 rebounds) and Jason Senior (17 points, 8 boards) and superb efforts from sophomore Kareem Hanley (16 points, 3 three-pointers) and junior Danul Cabbagestalk (10 points, 5 rebounds).

Two days later, Malave (DeWitt Clinton / Bronx, NY) surpassed the 1,000 point barrier en route to an 86-72 victory over York College at New York City College of Technology’s Klitgord Center in front of a full house. Malave, a 6’7” preseason All-American was held to his lowest output of the season (ten points, six rebounds) but a made free throw on the back end of a one-and-one gave the three-year Yellow Jacket standout his seventh point of the contest making him the only man in the fifty-plus year history of City Tech basketball to accomplish the grand total. City Tech, which was competing as a junior college until 1999, saw current senior Camille Manning realize that feat last season.

Then as part of a quadrupleheader at CCNY, the Yellow Jackets played in the 2004 CUNY / NJAC Challenge, with City Tech falling to Richard Stockton College (Pomona, NJ) 71-69 in a heartbreaker. The challenge to see who’s the top Division III conference in the Metropolitan area was played at six different CUNYAC sites featuring all ten members from each league versus the other for 20 total games (men and women). City Tech’s two seniors, Malave and Senior led the way once again, with Senior netting a season-high 27 points and seven rebounds, while Malave collected 20 points and a game-high 16 caroms.

Last Monday, NYCCT got a balanced scoring output as the entire starting lineup finished in double-digits, but lost for the second straight time to The College of New Jersey, 87-80. Malave, who finished with 19 points and 11 blocked shots, just missed a triple double as he hauled down eight rebounds in the contest. Senior also contributed 19 points, while senior Nkosi Hamilton (Queens, NY/August Martin) added 16 points with a team-high nine rebounds and three steals.

Now with a three week break underway, Malave and Senior are tied for fourth place in scoring (17.6) in CUNYAC, while Malave is first in blocks (5.2) and second in rebounds (11.1). The team also leads the league in scoring defense at (66.6 ppg).

The team is now off until Wednesday, January 5th, when they will play at home versus Farleigh Dickinson University-Florham at 6:00 pm.
