Hunter Wins Fifth Straight Championship; Records Milestone 100th For Athletic Program
10/23/2005
Bronx, NY - - -Hunter won their fifth consecutive CUNYAC Men’s Cross Country Championship, outscoring runner-up Lehman by eight points, on Sunday morning at Van Cortlandt Park. The victory was the Hawks 100th championship since 1990 for the entire athletic program. The Hawks, who finished with 48 points, were able to hold off Lehman (56 points). York (60 points), John Jay (69 points), City Tech (137 points), Brooklyn (151 points), and Medgar Evers (185 points) finished third through seventh respectively. “I’m thrilled that our team was able to record the milestone championship victory for Hunter,” said head coach Ed Zarowin. “I was biting my fingernails throughout the race just hoping that we would be able to pull this one out. We knew going in that we would have to keep an eye on certain runners and each one of our guys had certain targets that they had to stay ahead of. Luckily we performed just well enough to earn the trophy.” Hunter received another outstanding effort from senior Omri Holzman, who closed out his CUNYAC career with a time of 27:00 en route his fourth individual title. “I definitely came into the race with an eye on finishing my career with a fourth straight title,” said Holzman. “I wanted to do something special that I can always remember when I look back on my career at Hunter. I wasn’t able to run my best today, but I won, and more importantly the team won another championship. It’s a great way to end my career. My goal now is to do the very best that I can in the post-season.”
Lehman’s Raul Sanchez placed fifth overall with a time of 31:52 and teammate Bill Agosto also was a top-ten finisher, crossing the line in 32:47 (8th). York placed three runners in the top ten as Omar Anderson (2nd, 31:12), Derek Gordon (4th, 31:38) and Pernell Duncan (6th, 32:06) all received medals. John Jay’s Juan Frias was third overall (31:25) and teammates Kevin Lavare (9th, 33:11) and Jorge Rosales (10th, 33:19) also performed well. Matt Wong (Baruch), Nekoro Sergeant (Brooklyn), Luis Garcia (City Tech), and Roger Mitchell (Medgar Evers) were the top performers for their individual schools. In the Community College race, Queensborough's Ceferino Alcaide placed third overall with a time of 29:48 and teammate Rocky Reyes was eighth in 31:18. Kingsborough's Ray Miley (30:08), Kevin Phillip (30:14), and Lindel Pope (30:47) finished 4, 5, and 6 respectively. 2005 City University of New York Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx New York - Sunday October 23, 2005MEN'S RESULTSTeam Results City University of New York
