The CUNY Athletic Conference is thrilled to announce post-season awards for women’s volleyball for the fall 2009 season. All awards were voted on by the conference’s ten head coaches.

 

The Player of the Year is Floriana Garo of the City College of New York, while Baruch teammates claim the Rookie of the Year, Melinda Santiago, and Libero of the Year, Posey Wilson. Jillian Acevedo of Lehman claims the Sportsmanship Award, and the Coach of the Year is Allison Stack of Baruch.

 

Garo (Senior, Outside Hitter, Red River, Albania) leads the conference in virtually every hitting category, and ranks thirteenth in the latest NCAA Division III national statistical rankings. Garo was a First-Team All-Star in 2008.

 

Santiago (Freshman, Setter, Bellport, East Patchogue, NY) has been a major cog in the Baruch College machine who leads the Conference in assists. Her aggressive play allows her to get to balls, keep them in play, and set up the hitters.

 

Wilson (Sophomore, Libero, Fayetteville, Fayetteville, Ark.) is a prototypical defensive specialist. She has 496 digs on the season heading into Championship Friday, an average of 4.28 digs per set.

 

Acevedo (Junior, Outside Hitter, Lehman HS, Bronx, NY) was an overwhelming choice for the Sportsmanship Award. Her on-court demeanor and support of teammates and opponents is a shining example and model of a true sportsman.

 

Allison Stack of Baruch is the Coach of the Year after leading the bearcats to a 25-7 record, including an 8-1 mark and a number one seed in the CUNY Athletic Conference Championships. It was a turnaround season, as Baruch went 17-20 a year ago.
