Flushing, N.Y. – The City University of New York Athletic Conference and Applebee’s have announced the 2012 Women’s Swimming and Diving All-Stars as well as Julia Sung from Baruch as the Athlete of the Year and Hunter’s Chryzl Goco as the Rookie of the Year. John Jay’s head coach Jessica Kolachovsky was selected as Coach of the Year while her athlete, Billie Jean Kuppler was awarded the Sportsmanship Award.
Sung had a slew of first place victories in her events this season including three top times in a tri-meet competition against Division II opponents Queens College and Adelphi University. The sophomore also earned seven gold medals at the CUNYAC/Applebee’s Swimming and Diving Championships and four new meet records were set. The Bearcats’ and Sung not only ended their regular season undefeated but set a new team record with finishing the season with the most wins.
“I want to thank my coaches who help make our team what it is and never giving up on us no matter how tired we are. I also want to thank my teammates for being there for me day in and day out,” said Sung. “Watching them work so hard only motivated me even more to accomplish my goals.”
Goco who has been honored three times this season with weekly rookie honors had an impressive freshman year swimming for the Hawks.
“Chryzl has been an incredibly hard worker for the Hawks. In addition, she has stepped up as a leader on our team. She’s at every work out, stays on top of it and makes sure everyone else is involved as well,” said co-head coach Scott Binter. “She deserves the recognition for all her efforts in the pool this season. We’re incredibly fortunate to have her on our squad and look forward to her contributions in the years to come.”
After taking over the program in 2008-2009, Kolachovsky has been improving the Bloodhounds’ program each year with their current record being 6-3 (4-2 CUNYAC). By having this third place finish in the conference the Bloodhounds’ have earned commissioner cup points for the first time since their 2005-06 women’s swimming season.
“I realize that all of my hard work has paid off and it showed this season,” said Kolackovsky. “A top three finish and the best record in program history along with the award is absolutely amazing. I could not be happier.”
Kolackovsky also spoke about this year’s sportsmanship award winner Billie Jean Kuppler as playing a critical role in the success of the Bloodhounds’ this year. Along with the two other senior captains, Kolackovsky stated “The leadership of my three season captains, Billie Jean, Kaili and Catherine Gomez was incredible this season. They did an amazing job of keeping the team focused all season long. They showed the underclassmen how to deal with school, swimming and work. I am pleased with their leadership and I am going to miss them greatly next year.”
