Baruch's Mata & Perez Named Top Player and Pitcher with Beavers' David Tabbed As Rookie for Baseball Weekly Awards

ALVIN MATA, Baruch

Outfielder/Senior/Tuckahoe, NY/George Washington

For the week Alvin Mata batted .533, scoring 10 runs while driving in four as he earns the player of the week nod. Mata was especially effective on the bases this week, swiping eight bases without being caught. The senior went 1-3 from the plate scoring two runs and stealing a base in the win over Mt. St. Vincent. He then went on to notch four RBI’s, scoring two runs versus Merchant Marine. In the first conference victory in the doubleheader against John Jay, Mata registered two hits, scored three runs and stole three bases in the 5-0 win. He followed going 3 for 4 from the plate scoring three runs and stealing another three bases in the second game over the Bloodhounds.

 

CUNYAC/MCU Baseball Pitcher of the Week

PAUL PEREZ, Baruch

Pitcher-Infielder/Freshman/Middle Village, NY/St. John Prep

Paul Perez notched his first career shutout in a win over conference opponent John Jay earning him a pitcher of the week honor. In the first game of the doubleheader against the Bloodhounds, Perez pitched a complete game, striking out five batters and surrendering only three hits in the 5-0 victory. With this win the Bearcats move to 2-0 in conference play and start their conference schedule on a strong start.

 

CUNYAC/MCU Baseball Rookie of the Week

ALEX DAVID, CCNY

Pitcher/Freshman/Brooklyn, NY/Stuyvesant

Alex David is named CUNYAC/MCU Baseball Rookie of the Week as he threw five solid innings against Rutger-Camden on the way to a 5-4 victory for the Beavers. Over the five innings the freshman pitched he surrendered just two hits while giving up one run and striking out one. With this victory, David started the first trend in CCNY’s 3-1 week as the Beavers went on to defeat Yeshiva in a doubleheader. City College is set to return to action Wednesday March 28 at Randall’s Island to take on SUNY Maritime at 4:00 pm.
