The CUNY Athletic Conference and Applebee's are proud to announce the 2013 CUNYAC/Applebee's Women's Soccer All-Stars. CSI senior Demi-Jean Martorano earned the Player of the Year award while Brooklyn's freshman standout Jordan Kerwin was named Rookie of the Year. Her head coach Patrick Horne was deemed Coach of the Year while John Jay's Katelyn Davis was the Sportsmanship Award recipient. CUNYAC Champion Brooklyn took home the most honors with eight followed by CCNY at seven. Runner-up CSI notched five awards while John Jay and Lehman earned three each to round out the winners.
Demi-Jean Martorano has been a leader for the CSI Dolphins since joining the team just four years ago. This season she led the conference with 26 goals which was good for a CUNYAC leading 1.238 goals per game. Martorano was also tied for the CUNYAC lead in game-winning goals with six throughout the year. Her strong play was key in propelling CSI's team to their best record in school history.
"Winning Player of the Year is such an amazing accomplishment and I am so grateful and excited to receive this honor," said Martorano. "I have to thank my team for helping me every step of the way this season, and couldn't have asked for a better team to step on the field with. This is awesome, and I'm truly so happy!"
Jordan Kerwin was a big part of the CUNYAC Champion Bulldog squad. Her 18 goals were good for fourth in CUNYAC while 1.059 earned her the third spot in goals per game. Kerwin also helped create shots as she was tied for ninth place in assists at six. Her 42 points and 4.27 points per game were both fourth in the conference.
"It's such an honor to be recognized for such a great award," said Kerwin. "Coming into this season I would have never imagined such an amazing outcome. I'm so thankful to have been a part of such a dedicated and hardworking team."
Patrick Horne is just two seasons in to building a Brooklyn College Women's Soccer program but he has already made the Bulldogs a force to be reckoned with. In their first year as a team last season, Brooklyn finished with an overall record of 6-7-1 and 2-4 in CUNYAC. This season was a different story as the Bulldogs went on to a 15-3 overall mark and a 5-1 in-conference record that earned them the number two seed in the CUNYAC Tournament. The young program has already earned their first CUNYAC Title and their first NCAA Tournament berth.
“It’s tremendously gratifying when your colleagues recognize your hard work, but this Coach of the Year award was only possible because of the cooperation of a disciplined, hard-working team and because of the support of my assistant coach Nathifa Amuaku,” said Horne. “The support also from Brooklyn College president, Dr. Karen L. Gould, Athletic Director Bruce Filosa and the entire athletic department staff and of course my family made this award possible.”
Katelyn Davis is a major part of the Bloodhounds' team. Her leadership and passion for the game is inspiring to her teammates and opponents. Always willing to lend a hand, she always displays proper sportsmanship despite what the score may be.
“I'm truly humbled by the sportsmanship award, and I want to thank CUNYAC for encouraging a positive atmosphere for the student-athletes," said Davis. "I'm thankful to be part of a team that can put a hand out to congratulate at the end of a game, even when the score isn't in our favor. That's so important in being an athlete. You can't always win, but you can always carry a professional attitude.”
