York's Woods and Bearcats' Shanahan Net Weekly Awards

Michael Woods has been named the CUNYAC/Con Edison Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of 11/18-11/24. At the Captains Shootout at Christopher Newport University this past weekend, the junior was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 31.5 points per game over two games. In the Cardinals’ first game of the tournament against Christopher Newport, the Brooklyn native netted 30 points in a lost. In their following game against Methodist University, Woods added 33 points and five assists in a 93-83 overtime win. Over a four game this season, he is averaging 29.8 points a game.

Forward/Freshman/Staten Island, NY/St. Peter’s

Jack Shanahan has been named the CUNYAC/Con Edison Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week for the week of 11/18-11/24. in two games throughout the week, the forward totaled 13 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. In the Bearcats’ first game of the week against Centenary, the first year player netted seven points and had three steals in a great defensive effort. In their following game, the Staten Island native scored six points, grabbed four rebounds, and dished-out two assists in a win over Yeshiva.

Baruch played two games this week, going perfect 2-0 in out-of-conference play. The two victories has brought their record to 3-1 overall. The Bearcats will return to action next Tuesday, November 26 on School Spirit Night against Hunter College at 7:30 pm.

The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team posted an even 1-1 record this past week. Junior Edon Gjonbalaj paced the Bulldogs with 16.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg and 2.0 spg, while classmate Jai Kellman added 16.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 3.0 spg and 2.0 apg. Sophomores Egzon Gjonbalaj (13.5 ppg) and Jamel Gist (11.5 ppg) were also in double figure scoring on the week.

CCNY had a thrilling opening night victory over TCNJ. Down by seven with two and a half minutes left, Che McCoy and Anthony Lewis lead the Beavers back, closing out the game on an incredible 12-2 run including a game-winning three at the buzzer. Facing Yeshiva on Sunday, City was down big for most of the game before freshman Khalil Hamer nearly led the rally back, scoring 24 points off the bench.

Lehman remains with an even record, at 2-2. Last week, Lehman nearly pulled off the upset, 80-76, at William Paterson. Brandon Stolz and Jerrome Jones each recorded double-doubles. Stolz had 20 points, Jones 10. Each had 10 rebounds. Ryan Alvarado and Danny Rock each also scored in double figures, with 13 and 11, respectively.

The Hawks defeated Yeshiva University this week, 63-49. Hunter lost a thrilling game in overtime to Rutgers-Newark, dropping the game by one point 80-81.

The Cougars had a tough week, losing 3 games to very good schools. On Wednesday, the Cougars lost to Farmingdale State 73-48. On Saturday, the Cougars fell to host Manhattanville College 94-73, then in the consolation game fell to Catholic University 91-71. Junior Guard Khalid Yousef was named to the All-Tournament Team at the 2013 AJ Buchanon Classic at Manhattanville College.

CSI lost for the second time this season via overtime, coming back from 18 down, the Dolphins had lead in the last minute but FDU was able to force overtime and from there the Dolphins fell. CSI is currently in the middle of a six-game road swing to open the season. They open up CUNYAC play with a Tuesday date at York College.

York picked up a win over Methodist in overtime in the consolation game of the Captains Shootout Tournament on Sunday. On Saturday, they lost to host Christopher Newport in another tight game. Michael Woods was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 31.5 points per game over two contests. York will play its home and conference opener on Tuesday against Staten Island at 8 p.m.
