CCNY's Marotti and Bulldogs' Bogdan Take Home Top Women's Volleyball Accolades

The CUNY Athletic Conference and Pepsi are proud to announce the 2013 CUNYAC/Pepsi Women's Volleyball All-Stars. CCNY's Leticia Marotti earned Player of the Year while Julia Bogdan of Brooklyn was named Rookie of the Year. Lehman's head coach Elvis Rodriguez was deemed Coach of the Year while Brooklyn's Lisenia Rodriguez earns the Sportsmanship Award. Lehman, Hunter, and CUNYAC Regular Season Champion Baruch had four honorees each while Brooklyn earned three accolades and CCNY, John Jay, and Staten Island took home one apiece.

Leticia Marotti had a breakout season for the Beavers. Her 3.70 kills per set were not only best for CCNY but tops in CUNYAC. Her .212 hitting percentage was also amongst CUNYAC’s top ten. On top of her offensive abilities, Marotti was able rack up 2.64 digs per set to help the Beavers keep opponents off the scoreboard often.

“I’m honored that I was voted CUNYAC Player of the Year," said Marotti. "It took an incredible amount of hard work, and it could never have been possible without the support of my coaches and teammates. Even though the year didn't end the way we wanted, hopefully next year all our hard work will pay off."

Julia Bogdan was clearly one of the top rookies in the conference all season long. For Brooklyn, the freshman standout was their go-to hitter for most of the season leading them in both kills and kills per set. Overall, she was ranked 6th in CUNYAC for kills per set and first amongst rookies. Her 1.74 digs per set were good for second on the Bulldogs.

“It’s a great honor,” said Bogdan when informed she had been named the CUNYAC Rookie of the Year. “It’s always a good feeling to be recognized by other coaches for all the hard work you put in throughout the season as a student-athlete. Although this is an individual award, I could not have had the success I experienced in my first season without the help and support of my teammates and coaches.”

Elvis Rodriguez guided Lehman to a sensational season after taking the head coaching position earlier in 2013. Last season, the Lightning was 13-15 overall and 5-3 in CUNYAC. This season Lehman went 20-7 overall and 6-2 in CUNYAC play. His ladies were third in CUNYAC for hitting percentage with .149 and assists per set at 8.32. Rodriguez’s team also led CUNYAC in serving aces per set with a 3.53 mark. Stunningly, his team kept opponents from scoring on a regular basis with a CUNYAC-leading .059 opponent hitting percentage.

"I am honored to receive this award," said Rodriguez. "There are so many great coaches in this league, so for them to name me the Coach of the Year, that’s incredible."

Lisenia Rodriguez is a dedicated, passionate, and inspirational student-athlete. Volleyball has always been a passion for her since high school; however, throughout her collegiate career she has had to make personal sacrifices along the way. On more than one occasion, Lisenia has had to put her academics and volleyball on hold in order to secure a full-time job to contribute to her family's financial needs. She still managed to take classes on her days off. This past summer, Lisenia worked countless hours to ensure not only her family's financial stability, but her own as well, so she could attend school full-time in the fall and play volleyball for her senior year. Lisenia made a financial commitment to her family and a heartfelt commitment to her volleyball team. This season, Lisenia has been the epitome of a responsible team player. She is a mentor to the underclassman and an inspiration to her fellow seniors. She has proven that as a CUNY student-athlete you can achieve anything.

"I'm very grateful for this award and for the acknowledgement from my coach, as well as the other coaches in the conference," said Rodriguez. "I always try to motivate my teammates and play with heart because we all love this sport. Win or lose it's important to respect the game and be a good sport."
