CCNY Men and Lehman Women Lead After Day 1

After Day 1, Lehman is leading on the women's side by 12 points while CCNY leads on the men's side by 11 points.

Women's Championship

After Day 1, it is Lehman on top looking for a second consecutive crown with 74 points followed by CCNY and Hunter tied at 62 points, York at 10, and Medgar Evers at 2 points.

The meet began with the 400 Meter Hurdles. Lehman's Shantay Beccan took home the first gold medal at 1:06.24. CCNY's Leandra Haynes and Ramatulai Bah came in next at 1:10.26 and 1:13.17, respectively. First overall went to Monique Flemming from Kingsborough's Wave at 1:06.08.

Hunter's Lizzy Mahoney began her final CUNYAC Championship in style with a gold medal in the 10,000 Meter Run as she finished in 39:15.75. Lehman's Melissa Martinez and Hunter's Jenny Son took silver and bronze respectively with times of 46:58.51 and 47:06.20. Overall, Queensborough's Diana Chumbay finished second at 46:48.64.

The only event begun and not ended on the first day of competition was the 100 Meter Hurdles. Qualifying for the finals on Sunday were Lehman’s Shantay Beccan, CCNY’s Ramatulai Bah, Hunter’s Almeda Spahija and Rachel Ross, York’s Shanice Brown, CSI’s Victoria Barry, Medgar’s Samantha Brathwaite, and BCC’s Renee Reid.

The track events ended with another strong performance by Tobi Alli of Lehman at 12.05. She was followed closely by Shantel Peters of Hunter at 12.68 and Lehman's Jasmine Springer at 12.90. Overall, QCC's Tshani Mitchell nabbed third place at 12.74.

In field events, Lehman's former All-American Tobi Alli nabbed gold when she flew 5.56 meters. Closing out a podium sweep were teammates Jasmine Springer and Shantay Beccan at 5.52 and 5.08, respectively. 

Hunter's Ashley Haynes took gold in the Discus Throw as she let it sail for 30.04 meters. Lehman's Aminat Adebayo snagged silver at 26.52m and CCNY's Asha Brown threw it 24.38m. Overall, Bronx All-American Naomi Hines threw the farthest at 31.83 meters.

A podium sweep was destined in the Pole Vault as CCNY's trio of Leah Dawkins, Zulena Saravia, and Ramatulai Bah cleared heights of 2.28, 2.13, and 2.13, respectively. Dawkins broke the CUNYAC record set back in 2001.

Day 1 ended with the Javelin Throw was won by Hunter’s Almeda Spahija at 26.12 meters. CCNY’s Ramatulai Bah threw for 25.34 meters followed by Ashley Haynes from Hunter at 24.41 meters.

Men's Championship

With one day in the books, CCNY leads in its search for another championship with 82.50 points, followed by Medgar Evers at 71.50 points, Hunter at 27 points, York at 25 points, and Lehman at 1 point.

In the 400 Meter Hurdles, Medgar Evers' Wendal Davis snagged gold in 56.81. He was closely followed by Christopher Peguero of York at 57.55 and fellow Cougar Junior Kennedy at 57.70. Amin Garcia from Kingsborough took third overall at 57.63.

The Men's 10,000 Meter Run saw a Hunter gold as Luka Spionjak finished in 37:11.17. Seconds later, Mark Lord from Medgar Evers came in at 37:17.99 followed by York's Kyle Gomes at 37:26.23. Queensborough's Kevin Lopez and Joe Zempolteca finished at 36:02.01 and 36:18.05, respectively to take first and second overall.

The only event begun and not ended on the first day of competition was the 100 Meter Hurdles. Qualifying for the finals on Sunday were Medgar’s Junior Kennedy, CCNY’s Robens Bien-Aime and Bassit Malam, Lehman’s Ibrahima Souare and Norvil Lindsay, Hunter’s Diego Buen, KCC’s Amin Garcia, and QCC’s David Johnson.

Finishing out the track events was the 100 Meter Dash. CCNY's All-American Theirry Diessongo ran a 10.87 to secure gold while Shaquille Hodge of York nabbed second at 11.04 and CCNY's Peter Dehayza rounded out the podium at 11.17. Former All-American Kester Chase from Kingsborough finished second overall at 10.98.

In the field events, Javelin had a one-two finish for Medgar Evers as Elston Alexis and Kadeem Campbell threw 51.90 meters and 50.38 meters, respectively. CCNY's Steve Baker took third at 49.02 meters. 

A podium sweep by CCNY in the Pole Vault as Donald Dibari cleared 4.27 meters followed by both Jonathan Elysee and Bassit Malam finishing at 2.31 meters. Dibari would destroy the previous record of 2.59m in 2002.

Another strong field event for the Cougars of Medgar Evers came in the Discus Throw with another gold medal for Elston Alexis at 36.99 meters. CCNY's Steve Baker threw 35.97 meters followed by Vondel Mahon at 32.45 meters to round out the podium.

Ending the day was the Long Jump in which a Hunter gold was sealed by Javier Levy with a distance of 6.57 meters. He was nearly outdone by Peter Dehayza and Samuel Nkama from CCNY with 6.52 meters and 6.47 meters, respectively. 

Community Colleges

Beginning with the 400 Meters Hurdles, KCC's Monique Flemming took home gold at 1:06.08 on the women's side. For the men, Amin Garcia took third overall at 57.63.

In the Women's 10,000 Meter Run, Queensborough's Joselin Rodriguez finished second overall at 46:48.64.

100 Meter Dash action saw Tshani Mitchell nab third place at 12.74 on the women's side while former All-American Kester Chase finished second overall at 10.98.

In the field events, Bronx All-American Naomi Hines nabbed first overall at 31.83 meters in the Women's Discus Throw.
