CSI’s Fonseca and Baruch’s Ekekeugbor Take Home Weekly Awards

CUNYAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week

Will Fonseca, Staten Island
Forward/Junior/Brooklyn, NY/Susan Wagner

Will Fonseca has been named the CUNYAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week from the first game until 11/16. The Brooklyn native averaged 23 points and 12.5 rebounds in two games against Salem State and UMass. The junior had 3 steals combined over the course of the two games.  Fonseca was eventually named Tournament MVP for his impeccable play over the weekend.

CUNYAC Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Chimaechi Ekekeugbor, Baruch
Forward/Freshman/Matawan, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy

Chimaechi Ekekeugbor has been named the CUNYAC Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week from the first game until 11/16. The freshman has performed nicely so far this season, scoring 17 points in a 89-69 win over Baruch. The New Jersey native shot 8-10 from the floor in the first game of the season.

CSI went 1-1 in the Hampton Inn Classic played at UMass-Dartmouth this weekend. This week they travel to play Ramapo College on Wednesday night, before their home opener the following Tuesday against Hunter College.

Medgar Evers Cougars (0-1 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC)
Last Week (0-1 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC)

The Medgar Evers College Cougars started the season 0-1. On Saturday Novemeber 15, 2014, they fell to the College of Mt. St. Vincent 84-61. Junior Guard Matt Walker scored 22pts and Freshman Guard Reynaldo Eloy dished out six assists.

CCNY Beavers (1-1 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC)

CCNY men's basketball is off to a 1-1 start, with a win over Penn State Harrisburg at the Lions' Tip Off Tournament. Anthony Lewis and Khalil Hamer were both exceptional, making the All-Tournament team. Lewis averaged 19 points and 12 rebounds on 69% shooting from the floor in the tourney, and had a tremendous opening day against the host Lions, leading with 26 points and 19 rebounds, both game highs. Hamer filled the stat line, averaging 22.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 steals and 2.0 assists.

Baruch Bearcats (1-0 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC)

Baruch started the season on a positive not defeating Kean by the score of 89-69. The men's basketball team will return to action next Saturday, November 22, with a 2:00 pm non-conference contest at the Cyclones of Centenary College in Hackettstown, New Jersey.

John Jay Bloodhounds (1-1 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC)
Last Week (1-1 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC)

John Jay went 1-1 last week in their opening weekend. The Bloodhounds fell to NYU, 80-51, on November 15, before picking up their first win of the season on November 16, 76-67 against Old Westbury. Senior Kendal Jordan helped the Bloodhounds with his a double-double in each of the games combining for 28 points, 20 rebounds and six steals to conclude the weekend.

York Cardinals (1-1 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC)
Last Week (1-1 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC)

The Cardinals went 1-1 this past week, losing 69-65 to McDaniel College in OT, and defeating Penn-State Harrisburg 69-61. York will have this week off, but will be back in action next week on the 25th as they take on CUNYAC rival Medgar Evers in their first CUNYAC game of the season.

Lehman Lighting (1-1 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC)

Lehman opened the year with a 1-1 performance and a second place finish in the Rowan University Invitational. In the opener, Lehman won, 78-74, in double overtime, before falling to the hosts, 74-57, in the Championship Game. In the 2OT win, Lehman came from behind at the end of regulation and at the end of the first overtime. At the conclusion of that first OT session, forward Chaun Miller nailed a dramatic 28-foot three-pointer as time expired.

For their efforts, senior Jonathan Greenfield and junior Chaun Miller were named to the All-Tournament team.

This week, Lehman will host a pair of non-conference games, facing William Paterson on Wednesday, and Bard on Saturday.

Brooklyn Bulldogs (1-1 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC)

The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team began the 2014-2015 season under first-year head coach Rich Micallef with a solid showing, posting a 1-1 record. The Bulldogs dropped an overtime thriller at William Paterson University before defeating Stevens Institute of Technology on the road. BC will have three big games this week, as Brooklyn will travel to New Jersey City University (11/19) before participating in the Manhattanville College AJ Buchanan Classic. The Bulldogs will take on host Manhattanville on 11/21. The championship/consolation game is scheduled for 11/22 against either NYU or Sage.

Hunter Hawks (2-0 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC)
Last Week (2-0 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC)

The Hawks opened up the 2014-15 season going 2-0 at the Admirals Classic, getting wins over Maritime College and the USMMA.

The Hawks had great success at getting the free throw line in both contests totaling 74 free throw attempts. Lester Anim led the Hawks against Maritime with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Brian Kruger led the team with 24 points against USMMA, including 14-for-14 from the free throw line.

This week the Hawks host Yeshiva University on Tuesday in the 2014-15 home opener and then they travel to Amherst to participate in the Amherst College Tournament.
