The 2015 CUNYAC/University Student Senate Men’s Cross Country Championship was held on Sunday, October 25th at Van Cortlandt Park. The Dolphins from Staten Island came out on top for the third consecutive season. John Jay’s Richard Brienza was the race’s MVP after coming over from Queensborough this season.

“I thought the day went well,” said Brienza. “My strategy was to stay with the top two guys. I didn’t expect the win so it was a really good day.”

13626Brienza finished the 8K course with a time of 29:29.7. For over 7,000 meters, he was in behind the leader but in the final sprint, he closed the gap and won by 5 seconds faster over second place finisher Walter Rodriguez from Hunter at 29:34.6. Third place went to CCNY’s Rowan Cruickshank at 29:39.7.

The Dolphins finished with 45 points with scorers finishing at 5, 7, 10, 11, and 12 for the best score since 2012 (Hunter 33 points). They took the title by a 17-point margin over CCNY at 62 points and Hunter with 64 points followed by John Jay in fourth at 72, Lehman in fifth at 143, Baruch in sixth at 170, York in seventh at 172, York at 220, and Brooklyn rounding out the field with 241.

First to finish for CSI was Liam McMunn at 30:00.2. Next was Kenneth Morella with a time of 30:08.0. After that, the Dolphins grabbed three straight as Andrew Scharf, Matthew Day, and Samuel Obisanya finished back-to-back at 30:32.3, 30:35.6, and 30:57.1, respectively.

The championship gives the Dolphins their 3rd title which ties them with John Jay for second place on the all-time list.
