Championship: #1 Queensborough 3, #2 Kingsborough 0 - Box Score

The championship game of the CUNYAC/Pepsi Community College Women’s Volleyball Championship was between #1 Queensborough and #2 Kingsborough at Hostos Community College.  This was the third time that these two teams faced off this season, with Queensborough winning every game this year to make the 2015 CUNYAC Community College Women’s Volleyball Champions.  The Tiger’s height gave them a blocking advantage, which allowed them to control the net.

Queensborough’s Alanna Caffrey said that, “Coming in as a freshman making it to the championship last year, I used that momentum to make it far this year.”

To start the first set, Kingsborough’s Pamela Martinez came out attacking early to give the Wave a 7-5 lead.  Multiple hitting errors for Queensborough gave Kingsborough easy points to give them a 15-9 lead.  The top seeded Tigers fought back using their height to their advantage racking up six straight points to tie the game at 16 all.  Zuri Williams didn’t shy away on the offensive or defensive side of the ball, helping Queensborough with big blocks and kills.  Tied at 20-20, the set went back and forth as Queensborough pushed ahead two points after a big time hit from freshman, Antonela Vrljic.  Vrljic gave the Tigers another kill to give them game point, then the set after a service ace, 25-22.  Martinez led Kingsborough with seven kills in the first set as Vrljic had three for Queensborough.

The Tigers came out with an offensive mindset to begin the second set with big time kills from Alyssa McAdam and Williams to take a 5-1 lead.  McAdam added two blocks early in the set to bring the game to 8-2 Queensborough.  Led by the attack of Emilija Bajramovic and Vrljic, the Tigers put together a 5-point run to give them a 14-4 lead.  Williams joined in on the attack with three quick kills as Queensborough pushed ahead 19-7.  The top seed didn’t look back and took the second set 25-11 to give them a 2-0 lead for the game.

Kingsborough wasn’t looking to be swept and began the third set on a 6-0 run with big hits from Pik Ka Tang and Jasmine Hardy.  Numerous errors hurt Queensborough early in the set as the Wave took a 10-5 lead.  However, the Tigers regained their composure to pull within one, 11-10.  With the Championship on the line, both teams picked up their played to bring the set to a close 15-14 lead in favor of Queensborough.  The Tigers put their foot on the gas and pushed ahead to a 21-17 lead with two kills from Alanna Caffrey.  After a service ace from Caffrey and a big time block from McAdam, Queensborough took the set 25-18 and the game 3-0 to become the 2015 CUNYAC Community College Women’s Volleyball Champions.

“It really means alot, these girls work so hard.. We did what were supposed to do, I’m very proud.” said Queensborough Head Coach, Jason Demas.

Alanna Caffrey of Queensborough won 2015 CUNYAC Community College Women’s Volleyball MVP as she totalled for 18 kills, 23 digs and 7 service aces in the semifinal and championship game.  Zuri Williams and Antonela Vrljic of Queensborough were named to the All-Tournament team as Pamela Martinez and Pik Ka Tang were named for Kingsborough.

Semifinal 1: #1 Queensborough 3, #4 BMCC 0 - Box Score

The first semifinal of the CUNYAC/Pepsi Community College Women’s Volleyball Championship was between #1 Queensborough and #4 BMCC at Hostos Community College.  Queensborough showed why they were the #1 seed after a dominating win.  The Tigers defended the net with 6 blocks and had a hitting percentage of .217 compared to BMCC’s .081.

The first set went to Queensborough with the Tigers using their height to their advantage.  Zuri WIlliams helped spark Queensborough’s momentum with her blocking.  The set went back and forth for the first 10 points, but Queensborough pulled away with 4 and 5 consecutive point runs to win 25-10.

Queensborough kept the momentum going with a early 15-5 lead in the second set after starting 7-1.  BMCC didn’t go down without a fight putting together a few 2-point runs with Kayshawna Richardson tallying five kills.  Led by Alanna Caffrey and Emilija Bajramovic who had three and two kills respectively, the Tigers won the set 25-13..  

BMCC came out on fire to start the third set scoring five unanswered points and then taking an early 10-3 lead.  However, Queensborough came back with six unanswered points to pull within one.  The set went back and forth with both teams playing exceptional leading to a 21-21 tie.  Brittany McNally held Queensborough together by being all over the court as the libero.  The Tigers wouldn't be stopped and scored five consecutive points to take the set 25-21 and the game 3-0.

Leading the way for Queensborough was Alanna Caffrey with 10 kills and 13 digs, with a hitting percentage of .273 and Zuri WIlliams and Emilija Bajramovic with 4 kills each.  Williams added in 3 solo blocks as Caffrey had 1.  BMCC was led by Kayshawna Richardson who had 14 kills, with a hitting percentage of .462 and 1 service ace.

Semifinal 2: #2 Kingsborough 3, #3 Bronx 0 - Box Score

The second semifinal of the CUNYAC/Pepsi Community College Women’s Volleyball Championship was between #2 Kingsborough and #3 Bronx at Hostos Community College.  Kingsborough played a smarter and more tactical game having less errors than Bronx, which led to their victory.  The Wave had an outstanding service percentage of .946 to allow them to earn a spot in the CUNYAC Championship.

Both teams came out ready to play beginning the game 11-8 in Kingsborough’s favor.  The Wave put together a 4-point run to go ahead 17-11 led by the play of outside hitter, Pamela Martinez.  Bronx stepped up their play on the defensive end and tied the set at 19 all.  The end of the set went back and forth with Kingsborough pushing forward and winning 25-22.  Martinez had 5 kills and 5 digs for the set while, Ashley Suarez of Bronx had 3 kills and 4 digs.

To start the second set, Kingsborough came out where they left off rallying together five consecutive points to give them a 5-0 lead.  The Broncos wouldn’t let this set get away from them putting together a few defensive stops to tie the set 7-7.  Both teams were competitive going point for point bringing the set to 13-11 in favor of the Wave.  Kingsborough continued their good play scoring nine consecutive points after three errors  from the Broncos to give them a 21-12 lead.  Pik Ka Tang led the Wave serving during their nine point run with one service ace.  Martinez gave Kingsborough a boost of momentum with a big block, which led to the Wave winning the second set 25-16.

The Wave continued to control the game beginning the third set 7-3.  Kingsborough put together a seven point run, which gave them a 14-5 lead.  Martinez had two service aces during the streak to help her team push ahead.  The Wave didn't look back and won the set 25-14 and the game 3-0 with a big kill from Martinez.  Leading the way for Kingsborough was Pamela Martinez with 17 kills, 9 digs and 2 service aces.  Debora Santoso chipped in with 23 digs.  Bronx was led by Ashley Suarez with 8 kills and 17 digs and Yeidy Montes de Oca and Hualeska Garcia who had 11 digs each.
