CUNYAC Men’s Soccer presented by Municipal Credit Union
CUNYAC and MCU are proud to announce the 2015 Men’s Soccer All-Stars. Graysen Carlson of John Jay was named the CUNYAC Player of the Year. CSI had three major award winners as Ruben Diaz earned CUNYAC Defensive Player of the Year, Brayan Evo received the CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, and John Tardy was named the Coach of the Year.
Baruch and Hunter dominated the First Team All-Stars represented with five and four student-athletes, respectively. CCNY was represented by four All-Stars including the Sportsmanship Winner, while Brooklyn was represented by four All-Stars and Lehman was represented by one.
Graysen Carlson of John Jay earned Player of the Year honors after an outstanding season with 17 goals with a shot on goal percentage of .594. Carlson was amongst NCAA leaders ending the season as 10th in total goals, 19th in goals per game with .94 and 24th in total points with 35. At one point in the season, Carlson was #1 in total goals in D3 NCAA. The senior worked hard in the off-season after being named to the Second Team All-Stars last season in 2014. He had two hat tricks this season against New Jersey City and Hunter.
“This award means a lot to me personally but I'd like to credit my teammates more so than myself. Whatever happens in the playoffs, I hope my team can take pride in the fact that they were the ones that won this award for me. Bloodhounds for life!" said Carlson.
Ruben Diaz of Staten Island earned Defensive Player of the Year after helping the Dolphins win the CUNYAC Regular season title and earn the #1 seed for the CUNYAC Championship Tournament. Diaz was a crucial part of Staten Island’s defense as he played a majority of the games throughout the season helping them earn five shutouts. The junior will be looking to bring home a CUNYAC title this year as the Dolphins play for the championship against CCNY on Saturday, November 6 at 4:30 at Brooklyn College.
“I’ve never played this game for recognition or awards, what’s kept me pushing has always been the team and the support, but to be recognized and awarded like this puts into perspective the hard work that came with the season. I won’t be happy with anything less than a championship.” said Diaz.
Brayan Evo of Staten Island earned Rookie of the Year honors after being as productive as a freshman could be. The Honduras native played in all 19 of the Dolphins’ game this season, scoring seven goals and dishing out six assists. Evo had a shot on goal percentage of .403, helping the Dolphins reach the CUNYAC Championship game against CCNY on Saturday, November 6 at 4:30 at Brooklyn College. The future is bright for Evo as he has already made a name for himself around the conference.
Head Coach John Tardy of Staten Island earned Coach of the Year honors after leading the Dolphins to a 10-8-1 (6-1-1) record this season. This is Tardy’s second consecutive year earning this award while leading CSI to the top of CUNYAC. The Staten Island native has turned the Staten Island Men’s Soccer Program around after being named head coach back in 2012. Before Tardy was in charge the Dolphins only won three games in 2009 and 2011 and four in 2010.
“It's a nice honor to win this award. An award like this usually comes down to the players and their performance. They worked hard all summer and in preseason and they got results during the season so this award is more of a reflection on them.” said Coach Tardy.
Abdul Rashid Abdulai of CCNY earned the Sportsmanship Award after portraying how the ideal student-athlete should behave on the field. Jacob Szumanski of Staten Isalnd, Julien Roussel of John Jay, William Rosales of Baruch, Krystian Boguski of Brooklyn, Carlos Aspiazu of Hunter and Christian Morales of Lehman each earned spots on the Sportsmanship Team.
"I would like to say first and foremost that I am very honored with this award. It wouldn't have been possible without my amazing teammates and a charismatic coaching staff. And I also thank CUNYAC for the award. Thank you." said Abdulai.
