The 2015-16 CUNYAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships ended on Sunday, February 7, 2016 at the APEX at Lehman College. After three days of events, it was the College of Staten Island Dolphins taking the crown for the third consecutive season and seventh time overall with a score of 568 points. There was a tie for second between Baruch College and Lehman College at 500 points. In fourth was Brooklyn College with a score of 264, and rounding out the field was York College with 107 points.
“It was a lot of hard work, this year we really had to earn this one.” said CSI Head Coach Mike Ackalitis on winning their third consecutive title.
The final day began with the longest race of the championship, the 1650 Yard Freestyle. CSI’s Derek Villa took home the gold with a time of 17:38.57. Coming in second was Enes Mernica from Lehman with a time of 18:00.68. Rounding out the podium was Stephen O’Driscoll from CSI with a final time of 18:34.28.
Next, swimmers took to the blocks for the 200 Yard Backstroke. Baruch’s Jacky Lau took home the gold with a time of 2:07.43. Coming home in second was Christopher Pinto of CSI with a time of 2:12.48. Taking home the bronze medal was Patrick Limage of Brooklyn College with a time of 2:13.98.
In the 100 Yard Freestyle, Lau made it back to back wins with an impressive time of 48.23. Coming in second was Lehman’s Jeremy Guerra with a time of 50.13. CSI’s Nicholas Defonte came home in third with a time of 50.35.
The 200 Yard Breaststroke had Anthony Preda of Lehman taking home gold with a time of 2:15.01. CSI’s Jonathan Gorinshteyn finished second with a time of 2:17.67, and in third was David Pejovic of Baruch with a time of 2:26.54.
The final individual event of the day was the 200 Yard Butterfly. Tim Sweeney took home gold with a time of 1:53.61. Coming home in second was Miguel Meza of Baruch with a time of 2:12.01. Coming in third was Carlos Alonso of Lehman with a time of 2:13.50.
Finishing out the day was the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The Dolphins took home the gold with the crew of Defonte, Gorinshteyn, Villa, and Sweeney, and their time was 3:18.74. Coming in second was Baruch with a time of 3:20.11; having a lineup of Scholes, Lubrino, Meza, and Lau. Taking home the bronze was Lehman. The four they sent out there was Fischer, Mernica, Preda, and Guerra. The Lightning’s time was 3:21.93
CSI’s Tim Sweeney was named MVP for a second consecutive year with 48 individual points and three broken CUNYAC records. Sweeney broke records in the 200 yard individual medley, the 100 yard butterfly, and the 200 yard butterfly. Last year Sweeney scored 48 individual points, and he also broke two CUNYAC records.
“I had high hopes on what I could do,” said Sweeney on breaking three CUNYAC records this weekend. “We have been training so hard the past few months, we had high hopes for this weekend.”
