NEW YORK, N.Y. (May 17, 2018) - On Thursday, the City University of New York Athletic Conference awarded its most prestigious honors, the 2017-18 Scholar-Athletes of the Year, at the 32nd Annual Michael Steuerman Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner at John Jay College in New York City.
In a tradition that started when the conference was founded in 1986-87, the CUNYAC annually recognizes four of its best graduating student-athletes, rich in both academics and athletics, as its Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
"Tonight brings together the vision that Michael Steuerman had for the CUNY Athletic Conference, and how we recognize what our athletes should be. And that they should be strong scholar-athletes," said CUNYAC Executive Director
Zak Ivkovic. "And in the 32nd year of this event, to have such an amazing class of winners, it epitomizes what this event means to the CUNY Athletic Conference and how proud we are of our winners tonight."
In 2017-18, the four student-athletes to earn the distinct honor were BMCC's
Stela Vaso, Kingsborough Community College's
Asaph Charles, College of Staten Island's
Ewa Wojciechowska and CCNY's
Anthony Cacchione.
The four Scholar-Athletes were each presented with an iPad, a watch and a $1,000 Post-Graduate Scholarship check, sponsored by Bob McCloskey Insurance.
"It's just an amazing combination of achievements, both on and off the field and in the community," commented Ivkovic about the four winners. "You see the grade-point average, but you also see their outstanding accomplishments. And then to see all of the other ways that they better themselves before they graduate college, it leaves you in a state of awe. We are proud to have them and proud to send them off by congratulating them on everything they have accomplished."
"This is a culmination of such a remarkable year," said CUNY Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
Christopher Rosa. "The opportunity to celebrate the remarkable achievements for our incredible scholar-athletes, who have done historically well. It is unprecedented in CUNYAC history. We are so proud of them."
Rosa then added: "I think (Athletics) plays a tremendous role in the development of student-athletes. I think it's a great opportunity to learn about leadership by practicing it. No one understands the way to work in teams better than our student-athletes. It is the most cherished and coveted skill that employees look for, and our student-athletes embody that. They serve as a beacon of hope and a great source of pride of our campus community and our university in general."
