NEW YORK, N.Y. (May 17, 2018) - After winning league titles in four different sports this year, the College of Staten Island was awarded the 2017-18 CUNYAC Commissioner's Cup on Thursday at the 32nd Annual Michael Steuerman Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner at John Jay College in New York City.
For the Dolphins, it is their first Commissioner's Cup since the 2000-01 campaign. It is only the second Cup win in their history.
Under the guidance of Director of Athletics
Charles Gomes, CSI received 113 points over the course of the academic year, besting runner-up and last year's champion, Hunter College, by a narrow eight-point margin.
"It's really just a great feeling for us this year," Gomes stated. "The last few years, we have been so close. It was honestly something that we set as a goal for ourselves. Our coaches, our student-athletes, our administrators worked hard all year long. For us, this is really validation of all that work that you put in. It's all about seeing our kids achieve and succeed on the field and in the classroom. It tops it off for a great ending and a great way to celebrate our staff and our kids."
"Well, I think it's exciting (to win a Commissioner's Cup), especially on Staten Island, where we are in the press every day," said CSI President
Dr. William Fritz. "This is something we have been working for, for many years. I am so excited for what this means for us. It really helps promote our athletic programs and acknowledge the hard work of our students."
In 2017-18, the Dolphins won CUNYAC Championships in women's soccer, men's basketball, baseball and softball. They also increased their scoring, by virtue of earning a regular-season title in women's tennis, in addition to posting second-place finishes in men's swimming and diving and women's basketball.
Meanwhile, Hunter was bolstered by championships in men's and women's volleyball and women's cross country, en route to an impressive 105-point finish in the standings. The Hawks got points in the maximum of 10 qualifying sports, the most of any school in the conference.
Baruch College followed in third with 76.5 points, led by a sweep in the pool of the CUNYAC Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. Additionally, the Bearcats won their second-straight league title in men's tennis, and added runner-up finishes in men's volleyball and women's cross country.
Lehman College (58 points) and City College of New York (50 points), separated by only a difference of eight points, rounded out the Top 5.
The Lightning struck for a CUNYAC title in men's soccer, and won the league's regular-season crown in men's basketball, while the Beavers ran to conference championships in men's cross country, and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field.
