WOMEN'S RECAP
Senior Alexandra Nkrumah closed out her York career on a high-note earning the championships’ Most Valuable Performer award for the fourth consecutive year. Nkrumah, along with senior Taneisha Renaud will close out their York careers with a CUNYAC outdoor title for each year.
Nkrumah competed in eight events, and took first six times (400m, 100m hurdles, high jump, long jump, triple jump, 4 x 400 relay) and finished third in the 800-meters. Her only slip-up was in the 400-meter hurdles, where she stumbled early in the race due to fatigue. However, Nkrumah would finish the race despite the fall and came back later to help her team win the 4x400 meter relay.
“I have to give a lot of credit to coach [Tom] Pope’s training,” said Nkrumah. “It helped me get through all these events. I just tried to stay positive and take one race at a time.”
Lehman, who came in second place, was led by senior Dorothy Jean-Pierre who took the gold in both the 800-meter run (2:22.89) and the 1,500 meter run (5:08.35). Hunter’s Jennifer Arozamena won the 10,000 meter run, (43:11.70) aiding the Hawks to a third-place finish. Lissette Robertson was the top finisher for Medgar Evers, earning a second place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (17.71) and CCNY’s Rhoda Ocansey won the javelin with a toss of 28.64 meters.
MEN'S RECAP
It was a true team effort for York on the men’s side, with only one person for the Cardinals winning an event. That one person was junior Kenny Jacquet, who dominated the distance events, winning both the 5,000 meters (17:10.01) and the 10,000 meters (37:33.12). York also came up big in the 4x400 relay, placing second overall and first among senior colleges, which secured the victory for York late in the meet.
Medgar Evers’ freshman Kadeem Cambell earned the meet’s Most Valuable Performer award after placing in a number of field events. Cambell won the triple jump (13.61m), placed second in the javelin (43.98m) and finished third in both the long jump (6.28m) and the high jump (11.66m) to lead the Cougars to a second place finish.
"I competed for four years in high school and three events in the Indoor Championships, but I never expected to have an impact on my team like this," said Cambell, from Brooklyn, NY by way of Paul Robeson High School. "I did six events today and I was so exhausted with the heat after the Javelin that coach pulled me from the 4x400 Relay."
The Lightning’s Irfan Anwar picked up a pair of second place finishes in the 800-meter run (2:01.14) and the 1,500 meters (4:16.06) as Lehman finished in third place. Hunter’s Joseph Papa led the Hawks, finishing second in both the 10,000 meters (38:06.80) and the 5,000 meters (17:16.08). CCNY’s Paul Dedewo won both the 400-meter hurdles (57.02) and the 400-meter dash (49.07), while City Tech’s Alexander Arslan was the Yellow Jacket’s top finisher, placing third in the 5,000 meters (17:54.32).
The Cardinals have now swept the entire track and field season, winning the indoor and outdoor titles for both men and women. It is the first time in school history they have achieved the feat.
“It’s unbelievable”, said head coach Tom Pope when asked about winning all four titles. “I didn’t know if we could do it. I knew all the teams would be coming for us after winning indoor, but we managed to pull it off.”
