CCNY CRUISES TO BOTH 2011 CUNYAC/APPLEBEE'S
OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD TITLES

FINAL RESULTS

Randall’s Island, NY – The CCNY Beavers completed the 2011 City University of New York Athletic Conference / Applebee’s Outdoor Track & Field sweep, as the both the men’s and women’s teams won the CUNYAC Outdoor Championships at Icahn Stadium today, just two month after holding the indoor trophies.

“This is an amazing accomplishment for both of these teams, and they truly deserved these championships,” said an emotional first-year CCNY head coach Hugh Reid. “We overcame so many obstacles this year, with the primary one being injuries. So many student-athletes stepped up for us, and we got this done as a team."

I’m extremely proud of the fact that we were able to build off of the success of our indoor season and capture another two titles here during the outdoor campaign. We’ve certainly set the bar high for ourselves for the upcoming years. What an incredible job by everyone involved.”

On the men’s senior college side, CCNY scored a whopping 203 points, with Medgar Evers claiming second place with 158 points and Hunter grabbing third place with 96. York, the defending champions, placed fourth (55), followed by NYC College of Technology (27) and Lehman (19) to complete the men's scoring.

Beaver standout Paul Dedewo – who has been battling left knee and right hamstring injuries since the end of the indoor season – was named the Most Valuable Performer of the meet, as he won four events: the 200 Meter Dash (21.97), 400 Meter Dash (48.91), 110 Meter Hurdles (15.79), and the 400 Meter Hurdles (57.55). He was also a member of the winning 4x400 meter relay team (3:25.10) that included Betrand Oubida, Bakary Touray, and Najua Ward.

Medgar Evers' Jomo Bullen had the top time all season in the 100 Meter Dash, winning the CUNYAC Championship in a sub-11 second time (10.93). Bullen also led the Cougars' 4x100 Meter Relay get the gold (43.67). MEC's Elston Alexis was also a standout on the day winning three events, the Discus (37.32), Javelin (13.61) and the Shot Put (13.61).

Hunter's Chirs Guerrero continued to dominate the long distance evnets this year, winning the 5,000 Meters (16.35.73) and the 10,000 Meters (41:56.40)

Other gold medal performances for the Beaver men included youngster Alain Saint Dic winning the triple jump with a leap of 13.08 meters, and Radoslov Boyukliev winning the Hammer Throw with a toss of 40.90 meters.

“I’m very proud of the way our team fought during this outdoor season,” Dedewo said. “It’s very satisfying to win this championship. One thing I noticed about our teams is that our confidence grew as the season progressed, and all of that culminated with us performing our hearts out here. As far as taking home MVP honors, I’m really shocked, not because I didn’t feel like I could do it, but because of the way I was able to fight through all of the injuries that have nagged me the entire season to perform the way I did today. It’s a great feeling. I also want to thank the coaching staff for their support as well.”

On the women’s side, CCNY scored 262 points, besting second place Hunter College (122 points) and third place Lehman (121 points). City Tech, Lehman and York, the 2010 champions failed to score as a team.

Two freshmen, Leah Dawkins of CCNY Natasha Hill of Bronx Community College were named Co-Most Valuable Performers of the meet. Dedewo and Dawkins were also named Indoor Championship Most Valuable Performers this year as well.

Dawkins won two events on the day, the 100 Meter Hurdles (17.03) and the Triple Jump (10.80 meters). She also claimed second place in the Long Jump (4.92 meters) and High Jump (1.45 meters).

“Today was a day where we saw all of our hard work for the entire season pay off,” Dawkins said. “To be able to come out and perform the way we did is a great thing to see. I take a lot of pride in being named the co-MVP, and I have to give a lot of credit to my coaches before guiding me and being behind me all season long.”
